Mumbai: Telugu superstar Nani has expressed deep concern over the alarming findings of the Hema Committee report, which sheds light on the exploitation and harassment faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. Speaking about the 233-page document, which is possibly the first of its kind in any Indian film industry, Nani emphasized the need for immediate action and responsible behavior on film sets across the country.
“The revelations in the Hema Committee report are not just concerning; they are shocking. It is crucial for every single person involved in the filmmaking process to lead by example when it comes to how people are treated in this profession,” said Nani.
The report, which was commissioned in the wake of the 2017 assault case involving actress Bhavana and actor Dileep, outlines a pervasive power structure in the Malayalam cinema industry that facilitates the exploitation of women at various levels. In response to the actress’s assault, the Kerala government set up the Hema Committee to investigate and address issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality within the industry.
Nani’s statement adds to the growing discourse on the need for systemic changes within Indian cinema to ensure safer and more equitable working conditions for all. The Telugu actor’s call for accountability is a reflection of the broader sentiment among industry professionals and the public, demanding justice and reform.
As the findings of the Hema Committee report continue to resonate, the focus now shifts to how these revelations will influence policy changes and industry practices moving forward.
